Hustlers lose at Breakaway Round 1 SFSCL

Hustlers first game of the new season ended in a disappointing loss yesterday to Breakaway CC.

Hustler captain Basil won the toss and decided to bat first with 3 of his players still on route to the ground. Chris and John opened the innings and John was out in the third over caught brilliantly at short mid off.

Ravi and Chris repaired the innings making sure that they didn't play any reckless shots and went to the break at 79 for 1 with Chris on 55 not out.

After the break Ravi went first for 24 and with Mike now at the crease the run rate went up for Hustlers. Chris was out for a fluent 86 followed by Mike for 26. Some later order hitting by Mohan saw the Hustlers total reach 176 in their 25 overs faced. We all felt that we were at least 50 runs short of a defendable total on the small outfield.

Breakaway came hard at the Hustlers bowling early on and with rustiness showing from the Hustler bowlers the target was reached by the 19th over. Ravi was the best bowler for Hustlers with 3 for 24 in his 5.

In general it was not a good start for Hustlers but they can still take some positives out of the game. Sanjeev bowled well in his first game back, Mohan showed that he is still a dangerous bowler, Ravi was back in the wickets instead of in the bushes, and Chris has continued his good form from last year with the bat again.

P.S
Players need to make sure they are in sync with their skipper during the week as to whether they are available or not for sundays game. Leaving their decision to the last minute will always impact the match result not knowing who is playing or not for the rest of the team as well as making the skippers job tougher.

Next week we face Vikings CC at the Yard.

  2. It's not always about winning championships, Anonymous.Winning is always nice but playing with a group of guys you enjoy whether you win or lose is better for someone in my advanced years and latter stages of my cricketing career. Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate that.

    1. Would you not like to see if you are a good batsman in DIV 1? A lot of people think you cannot handle the better bowling.

  3. I don't play the game to please other people. I play because I enjoy the game.Everybody has opinions and that is their personal choice. Some say I am good and some will say I'm bad but I'm not concerned whichever way they go. I take each game as a different challenge against different bowlers, different pitches, as every game to me is a different strategy. I test myself against them and when that time comes when I don't want that test anymore, then it is my time to retire.

    1. When you get fed up hitting 50's & 100's in the 2nd div and get bored doing that look into stepping up to the big bash.. I think you will do good.

  4. 1st, 2nd, 3rd Div are irrelevant when players are looking to have fun rather than championships. It's one of the reason players are unhappy every season jumping teams.
Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to win but what's the fuss?

    Softball was introduced for fun.

    1. Exactly my point.
Playing for a win is not all that matters. Having a few drinks, cracking a few jokes, and attempting to bring back glories from yesteryear when we could all move like Jonty Rhodes is what keeps us going. Nowadays it's more like "Jonty which road was that"......haha

  5. More runs again, Chris? It looks like you bullying those poor Yankees with your bat. It's about time you took up umpiring and stop showing off.

    1. Ravi's bowling was unreachable at times. The batsmens handle was not long enough to reach.
