Hustlers beat Vikings CC in Round 2 SFSCL
Hustlers round 2 performance against Vikings CC turned out to be a comprehensive win for them.
The margin of victory was an impressive 115 runs thanks to a superb bowling performance from Mukesh who finished with match figures of 6 for 13.
He was backed up brilliantly by some miserly bowling from Sanjeev, Amar, Mohan, and Retesh as the victory was completed in the 15th over of the Vikings innings.
Hustlers lost the toss and batted first. The start was a disaster for them as they were soon looking at the scoreboard reading 35 for 4 until Mukesh and Mike constructed a semi recovery with the bat. Sanjeev added a useful 26 runs in the second half and with Mike getting 68, and Retesh 12 (including 2 big sixes), the Hustler team finished their 25 overs at 179 for 9.
After a loose first over from Amar that cost 14 runs, the Vikings batting lineup fell to catches at mid wicket all eying the small boundary. Basil and Mohan taking crucial catches to change the quick start Vikings had. Mukesh then found his line and length immediatley and was soon troubling all the middle order batsmen with 3 wickets in the 12th over.
At the break Vikings were on the brink of a heavy loss with their score at 63 for 8. With one of their key batsmen on his way to hospital with a suspected dislocated finger, the final wicket was taken soon after the resumption of the game after the break with a spectacular catch from Chris. His easy catch was made to look spectacular with a jump, a roll, and a quick bow to the crowd as he held onto the ball to finish the Vikings innings at 63 all out.
Mukesh was oustanding with the ball and with Mike's 68, the new blood in our team looks like it is finally showing it's true potential for the rest of the season and the rest of the games coming up. The added energy and enthusiasm which had been lacking in past seasons is now back.
Next weeks game is against Miami Royals at the Yard once again.

Hustlers lose at Breakaway Round 1 SFSCL
Hustlers first game of the new season ended in a disappointing loss yesterday to Breakaway CC.
Hustler captain Basil won the toss and decided to bat first with 3 of his players still on route to the ground. Chris and John opened the innings and John was out in the third over caught brilliantly at short mid off.
Ravi and Chris repaired the innings making sure that they didn't play any reckless shots and went to the break at 79 for 1 with Chris on 55 not out.
After the break Ravi went first for 24 and with Mike now at the crease the run rate went up for Hustlers. Chris was out for a fluent 86 followed by Mike for 26. Some later order hitting by Mohan saw the Hustlers total reach 176 in their 25 overs faced. We all felt that we were at least 50 runs short of a defendable total on the small outfield.
Breakaway came hard at the Hustlers bowling early on and with rustiness showing from the Hustler bowlers the target was reached by the 19th over. Ravi was the best bowler for Hustlers with 3 for 24 in his 5.
In general it was not a good start for Hustlers but they can still take some positives out of the game. Sanjeev bowled well in his first game back, Mohan showed that he is still a dangerous bowler, Ravi was back in the wickets instead of in the bushes, and Chris has continued his good form from last year with the bat again.
P.S
Players need to make sure they are in sync with their skipper during the week as to whether they are available or not for sundays game. Leaving their decision to the last minute will always impact the match result not knowing who is playing or not for the rest of the team as well as making the skippers job tougher.
Next week we face Vikings CC at the Yard.

The new Spring season in the SFSCL starts this coming sunday with all the teams in both divisions starting with a clean slate once more.
Some teams have strengthened up with some heavy recruiting and some have dropped out in the off season. Players have once again left teams to go to others looking for a Championship while some have stayed where they are. It's always a sad moment when teams fold up and even sadder when players themselves run back to teams they previously had problems with. Movement in the SFSCL is the norm and that will never change. Is it really the teams that cause the problems or is it the player himself?
This season sees the Florida Cup plans in full swing as the leagues from NY, Canada, and Guyana all look to walk away with the much coveted Florida Cup Championship Trophy. The competition is scheduled for March 14th to 16th.
Another year is about to start and the games will commence with a heavy schedule for all the teams concerned. Good luck to everybody.

SFSCL Awards Night
The SFSCL Annual awards Presentation was again another huge success for all the guests and teams who attended the event.
The Hustlers 2 team players who attended the event saw skipper Basil collect his 50 plus score trophies, Amar his bowling award, Cliff with his 3 fifty plus scores awards, and Chris with his batting trophies. Absentees Ravi, John, Mike, Deo, and Terry's awards for bowling, wicket keeping, and batting accomplishments were received on the night and will be boxed up and presented to them all at the start of the new season.
The biggest award winner on the night for Hustlers 2 was a surprise MVP Award for 2013 top player in Division 1 that went to Chris. His yearly run count was over 1200 runs in the 3 seasons played that included 9 fifty plus scores and 4 hundreds. He also was a league record maker with 5 fifty scores in one season that included 2 hundreds during the summer season which really was a purple patch for him. He was also the only person in the history of the SFSCL to score back to back centuries in consecutive innings. His record breaking batting consistency was awarded with a nice looking trophy courtesy of CRICKETZONEUSA.
Chris would like to thank the SFSCL for acknowledging his performances throughout the year from his peers with a beautiful looking award. He added, "Each and every one of my awards are special to me but I would gladly swap them all for a Championship win for my side, and maybe this year will be our year when we accomplish that".He also would like to add a special thanks to his skipper Basil for allowing him to keep the position as opener for the Hustlers team during tough times with the bat and is hopeful that he can continue to do a good job for his team in the future seasons.
As the night went on and more drinks were drank to wind down the 2013 year celebration, we at Hustlers look forward to another year in the SFSCL in 2014 and wish all the teams competing the best of luck in the new seasons.

Gayle, Bravo sign central contracts. West Indies news
Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo have signed the West Indies
Cricket Board's annual retainer contract after a gap of three years. Both players were offered board's
Grade A contracts, but Kieron Pollard, who was the third player in 2010 to
refuse the central contract, did not feature in the list.
"I would like to believe it was a recommitment to West Indies
cricket from both of them," Michael Muirhead, the WICB chief, told the
Trinidad Express. "They were advised that they were being awarded
contracts and they accepted, so it augurs well for West Indies cricket and we
really did not have to go into negotiations or anything. The fact they are
presenting themselves, making themselves available at the expense of the other
leagues speaks for itself. I am happy about that."
Muirhead said the board was in discussions with the West
Indies Players Association to work out the best solution for issuing no
objection certificates to players when they go and play in other leagues. "For
West Indies cricket to thrive and to grow they have to make themselves
available," Muirhead said. "At the same time, we don't want to limit the amount
or prevent their opportunities to earn."
Other cricketers to make it to the top grade include Sunil
Narine, Darren Sammy, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels. While only
Kemar Roach was offered a Grade B contract, seven players were added to the
Grade C list. The board also announced the list of 10 contracted women
cricketers.

Injury prone Rampaul to return home.....Again !!!
West Indies in New Zealand 2013-14
West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul will miss the two T20s against New Zealand due to a thumb injury and will return home. Rampaul picked up the injury during a training session before the fourth ODI in Nelson and didn't play the two remaining ODIs.
"Ravi has sustained a fracture and we are looking to allow optimal healing rather than pushing an early return," said West Indies physiotherapist CJ Clark. "He will return home to allow the fracture time to heal and will commence fitness training in preparation for the Regional Super50 Tournament, starting later this month in Trinidad."
There will be no replacement for Rampaul in the T20 squad, which has now been reduced to 14. He is the latest West Indies player to join the injury list that includes Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels. Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard were ruled out before the tour began.
The injury prone Rampaul made a return to the ODI squad during the tour of India, following an ankle injury. He didn't figure in the Test squad in New Zealand but played the ODIs in Auckland and Queenstown.
All these West Indian injuries to key players in the squad with the IPL just around the corner is interesting. I wonder how many of them will be fit for the IPL?

Sunday March 16th Food Drive 2014
Softball cricket has played an important role in our lives away from Guyana. It has permitted us to reconnect, make and nurture new relationships with our fellow Guyanese from our country of birth. As we plan to take part in one of many softball tournaments scheduled for 2014, we the players, management, sponsors and supporters of CricketZone Enforcers would like to introduce to you, the softball fraternity participating in the Florida Cup 2014, to a small charitable act that is generating immeasurable delight in the lives of orphans in Guyana.
The softball players, friends, supporters and close acquaintances residing in New York City have donated toys, books, sneakers as well as financial assistance to several orphanages ‘back home’. This generosity was a result of a simple suggestion made on Facebook in November, 2013. The beneficiaries of our kindness were:
1) Alpha Children’s Home, New Amsterdam, Berbice, GY
2) Canaan Orphanage, Port Mourant , Berbice, GY
3) Anjuman Orphanage, New Amterdam , GY
4) The Guyana Red Cross Convalescent Home, Georgetown, GY
We will hold a non-perishable food drive on Sunday, March 16th, 2014 during the final. We will accept can goods, dry foods, etc. Our goal is to fill a 300 pounds barrel to ship to Guyana on Monday, March 17th, 2014 on behalf of the Florida Cup 2014. We request your assistance to support children who are in need of basic necessities. Please Contact Sureain (201)993-0951 Navin Narine (917)828-3489 Email Address: CRICKETFAN23@AIM.COM.

English round up for the 2013 Year
So another year has passed in the SFSCL
and another season from Hustlers 2 of promising so much at the beginning
saw us deliver very little at the end.
Key moments during the season saw
availability of regular players hurting us in big games when they were
not present. Relying on the same handful of players to produce match
winning performances were few and far in between mediocre batting and
bowling efforts. Availability of the big names in our side really do
benefit us but at the same time we still have to play with whatever we
have on the day and there were times when players were just going
through the motions expecting a win without a 100% commitment.
Commitment and mindset on match days are what wins you games as well as
your fair share of luck which we were lacking for most parts of the
year. Players at our advanced years we have reached, will never get
better as they simply are too old to learn new tricks and improve their
own game. In an ideal team we should always encourage youngsters to come
and play and learn the game the way it should be played but with not
many youngsters coming through the ranks, we at Hustlers 2 find
ourselves in a difficult position in the future. Hopefully that will
change soon.
Recruiting is always a hard task in our
league and the most you will get is a few stragglers coming from other
teams using our team as a stepping stone for better things for
themselves later on which we must look at and take into consideration
when we allow those individuals to join. Long term additions is what we
expect. I always believe that team harmony and unity is top criteria in
picking your squad and if you can all play together as one then you can
be a match for anybody you face.
We also need to get more tougher on the
field and play harder, we have to play like it is a final every game,
and most importantly be big enough to know when your form is not good
and to allow your captain to make the correct cricketing decision when
it matters. Remember, he is your leader and what he sees during the game
is not always going to be what you see as a regular player. We need to
support him and go with his decision when things are not going smoothly
on the field of play. It is not always about getting your allocated
overs or batting where you think you should be batting, there is more to
winning games than that. Cricket games can be looked at as a team game
but in reality it is not. When you have a bat in your hand, it is only
down to you to bat and also when you have the ball in your hand to bowl.
These two disciplines of the game are individual and it is up to you as
an individual to take the game by the scruff of the neck and do what
you have to your best ability. If that happens then results will change
over the course of time.
The Yard used to be our fortress when no
team liked coming to our place to play. Now we see everybody lining up
taking tickets eager to come to the Yard to give us a tough time. We
simply have got to go back to the basics of the game and do them well
from start to finish if we want to compete once more. Thinking like a
competitive cricketer and behaving like a cricketer doesn't always come
naturally to everybody and that is where you need to accept guidance
from the experienced players and not show that you know everything and
don't need advice. Everybody needs advice and it is only the real
players who take in that advice who succeed.
If that can happen consistently, then we
will be everyone's nightmare once again and bring fear to the opposition
with our strong batting lineup and bowling attack.
Players such as Retesh
have come on leaps and bounds since the start of the year and is
gelling into a very nice opening bowler capable of causing problems to
batsmen all around the league. If he carries on in the way he is
improving right now, he will become a very good player for us in seasons
to come. Ravi as always does his
usual thing by getting wickets and scoring runs in his own casual
manner. Whatever anyone says about him, I think he is useful in our side
still....lol
Hustler stalwarts Basil and Cliff
have scored runs throughout the year as per norm but both of them will
be the first to admit that they can both of done better individually
with the bat as their returns should have been more.
Terry, Mohan, and Amar have
led the bowling attack all year and somedays they all look unplayable
and fearsome but too many times they have looked pretty ordinary. With a
little more control they could be dangerous as a unit and we look
forward to a bit more improvement from the three of them.
Deo,
when available, was a big plus when he played with his contribution with
the bat and also with his mouth shouting pointers to our bowlers from
deep mid off. Jai, Derek, Keshore, and King all chipped in when necessary when numbers were short.
Hopefully, Mike
thinks twice about his retirement plans as he still has alot to offer
Hustlers as both as a batsmen and also with his years of experience and
knowledge. Johnno is another one who
would be the first to admit his batting form was way below his normal
returns and we are sure he will be out to impress next season.
As for me, I am pretty happy with the year
I had as a batsman even though there were times when I could have done
better for my team by not throwing my wicket away at crucial times. I
need to concentrate more at the crease which I'm planning on doing next
year.
The ladies, Satti, Joanie, and Devya have been with us all year and I would like to say a special thank you to them for all their support and help they gave our team.
With that all of my chest, I would like to wish everybody at Hustlers the best of luck.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to
all in the cricket world and enjoy this beautiful game when your turn
comes along. See you all next year.
Chris
