Phagwah Celebrations 2014

Some members from the Hustler squad enjoyed celebrating the Phagwah / Holi at Brian Picolo Park yesterday with the usual festival of colours and more importantly, the festival of numerous drinks. The gang had some fun in the park like they usually do wherever they go.

It was by all accounts a great day out and was well supported by players from all the teams from the SFSCL as well local people from the community. The six-a-side tournament was played as per usual  with the eventual winners being a made up team of players from various sides with all entrance fees and money collected going to the Mandir.

SFSCL Florida Cup Masters 2014 Champions

SFSCL Masters 2014
The SFSCL Masters squad became the new reigning Florida Cup Champions this past weekend after beating the much fancied Betterhope team in a fantastic game of cricket.

The weekend started off by beating the SCI team on friday morning but losing comprehensively to Betterhope in their second group game. Saturday morning the SFSCL had to beat the undefeated Orlando squad and came away with an emphatic victory, beating them by 55 runs to put them into the semi finals to face a strong Guyana Floodlights team.

Chris, Mahese & Bier
SFSCL once again and overcame the odds as they beat Guyana Floodlights by 4 runs in a thriller of a game in the semi final to see them advance to the final to face Betterhope once again. The much fancied Betterhope were in for a shock as the SFSCL team played to their maximum ability and gave one last effort to see them win by 22 runs.

The games were tough and the players themselves suffered with pains and sore muscles but when it mattered them came good in the end to claim the winners prize. Great friendships were formed over the weekend of fierce competiton but the real winner was the game itself. It was played in the best of spirit right to the end,

Bier, Ramesh & Chris
Well done guys and now you can take a bow.

FLORIDA CUP MASTERS CHAMPIONS 2014 SFSCL

The SCI team put together by Amar played their heart out over the weekend but fell short in their 3 games and were defeated by the stronger SFSCL, Orlando, and Betterhope teams. They all had fun in the competition and were all out to support the league side on finals day. Congrats to Amar and his crew for trying their best in between supplying plenty of jokes and liquid refreshments to everybody supporting them. The entertainment was very special.

SCI Masters minus a few
See you all in 2 weeks time guys when once again we get back to league action for Hustlers.

The Hustlers and Raiders cricket clubs make up most of the SCI squad this year and  it wouldn't surprise me to see them do well this time around.
With their unpredicted semi final appearance in last years Florida Cup, this time they look forward in going one step further to the final.

The ambulances and nurses are already on speed dial just in case the bones and muscles seize up for the squad after fridays games are finished. Ice baths are required straight after the games to rest those aging bodies as well as fish broth for the hungover ones on saturday morning.

Good luck guys.

Hustlers beat Starlite by 5 wickets

The Hustlers team beat a potentially slippery banana Starlite team in Round 5 yesterday.

Having lost the toss, Hustlers fielded first on a sweltering hot afternoon as the players got another shade darker than they already were under the hot sun.

The Yaad boys taking a few
Mohan started off the bowling well with his partner in crime Amar bowling superbly well together. They managed to get rid of the opener and then the Situationlist specialist batsman Ravi took care of 2 wickets.

Retesh and Sanjeev bowled magnificently in the middle overs with Retesh claiming a hat trick to finish with match figures of 4 for 28 off his 5. Sanjeev 1 for 20, Ravi 2 for 28, and Amar 2 for 28 were the other wicket takers as Starlite were bowled out for 103 in the 22nd over. Richard and S Sarran were the only batsman of note for Starlite with 35 and 27 scores respectively.
The ladies pose up
Mr Situationist, Devya, and Retesh 4 for 28 (hat tick)

Hustlers went to bat and lost John early once again with 28 on the board. Ravi went at 59 for 2, followed by Chris for 42. With the score at 74 for 3 at the break the Hustler team reached the winning total with Mike 16 not out and Sanjeev 15 not out in the 16th over seeing their team home with no other major scares.

It was once again another professional performance by the Hustler team as they now make it 4 wins in a row. With 2 weeks break now due to the Florida Cup and Phagwah festivities, the Hustler team can rest up and look forward to the second half of the season with good performances under their belt in the first half.

We would like to thank you all our spectators who came to watch, Lucky City for the food, and the local store for once again supplying enough liquid refreshments for the exceptionally thirsty Hustlers. Starlite, as usual were a great ambassador for the SFSCL as they played tough but fair all the way to the end and it was also good to catch up with some of my ex team mates, Morris, Buddy, Butts, Uncle Singh, Richard and Narine for a drink after the game.

With 3 solid performances in their last 3 fixtures, the Hustler team is looking to continue with their impressive form against one of the most underestimated teams in the Division.

Skipper's half century Big Bash

It was a great night for our skipper as he brought in his first half century all run in singles last night. Everybody who attended had a brilliant night with some fine food and drinks on offer all evening.

The Hustler team was in full force to celebrate this special day for skip apart from Terry who we all wish a speedy recovery from his recent illness who could not be present.

We would like to congratulate our skipper for a brilliant choice in selecting the venue. It was more than big enough to cater for all the guests who attended. The bar staff also did a fine job supplying drinks to the very thirsty all night long. All in all it was a superb night to enjoy this special day with our skipper.

Here are some of the pictures taken from last night at our skipper's 50th celebration.
There will be more to follow soon.

Roberts, Ambrose, Richardson set for knighthoods

Three former West Indies cricketers - Andy Roberts, Curtly Ambrose and Richie Richardson - are set to be knighted during the opening one-day international between England and West Indies in Antigua.

Although not officially confirmed, it has been reported in the Caribbean media that the trio will receive their honours from Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack during the lunch break. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Leader of the Opposition Antigua Labour Party, Gaston Browne are also expected to be attendance.

It will take the number of West Indies cricketers with knighthoods to 11 and four Antiguans following Sir Vivian Richards

Roberts represented West Indies from 1974 to 1983 and was part of the fearsome attack also comprising Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Colin Croft. He took 202 Test wickets at 25.61 from 47 Tests and 87 and 20.35 in ODIs.

Ambrose, who played from 1988 to 2000, claimed 405 Test wickets at 20.99 from his 98 Tests alongside 225 scalps in ODIs.
Richardson captained West Indies in 24 if his 86 Test, scoring 5949 runs overall including 16 centuries.

Gibson not ruling out England job

Otis Gibson has declined to reject the suggestion that he is interested in the role of head coach of the England side. Gibson, who is currently head coach of West Indies, is known to have expressed an interest in other coaching roles of late and is highly thought of at the ECB having worked as the England bowling coach before returning to the Caribbean in 2010.

Asked whether his "name was in the hat" for the England job, Gibson replied, somewhat enigmatically, "My name is firmly in the hat for this job I'm doing."

While Gibson went on to insist he was "fully committed" to his current role and "improving the fortunes of West Indies cricket," his failure to categorically rule out any interest in the England job will do little to douse speculation over his possible candidacy.

Div 2 Table after Round 4

The Hustler squad are now slowly creeping up the table in the current Spring Season 2014 and are healthily sitting at the no 2 spot.

Wins against Vikings CC, Miami Royals, and Warriors CC have shot them up the table after their heavy Round 1 loss to Breakaway CC at the beginning of the season.

The team players are combining well so far and have seen some individual MVP moments from Ravi 91 & 74 with the bat to go with his 9 wickets. Mukesh with 6 for 13 & 5 for 36 and Sanjeev 7 wickets with the ball. Mike 68 with the bat and also Chris 86 & 79. Finally the team has also learnt how to catch again. The season so far is going well and after their break, the Hustler team will be back at the Yard facing Starlite CC in Round 5.

Next sunday they have no game scheduled to play due to the skip's half century wine and dine fest this coming saturday night.

Kohli century seals another chase

Bangladesh v India, Asia Cup, Fatullah

India 280 for 4 (Kohli 136, Rahane 73) beat Bangladesh 279 for 7 (Rahim 117, Anamul 77, Shami 4-50) by six wickets

The Fatullah crowd waited for Virat Kohli to reach his 19th ODI hundred, and started heading for the exit soon after he reached the landmark. India still needed 77 from 12.3 overs in a chase that, if statistics were anything to go by, still had some juice remaining. They had every right to leave, however, as the India captain made 136 and easily brought out a six-wicket win.

Bangladesh's bowling attack hardly put a dent in the record 213-run third-wicket partnership, barely creating a chance that could keep the spectators on their seats for the entire game. Instead, the ground had almost emptied by the time India completed the win in 49 overs. This, after Bangladesh had posted 279 for 7 with captain Mushfiqur Rahim making 117.

Walkovers in the leagues on the up......what to do?

Already teams in both divisions are giving an easy 6 points and walkovers to other teams after just 4 weeks of games.
Why are they doing this and what needs to be done to prevent this from happening in the future?

Not only is this sending out the wrong message to everybody on the outside looking at our league but it is impacting other teams from gaining playoff positions.

What are the alternatives?

Do we go back with a 3 division setup and make teams play against teams of their own standard?
Penalise and fine teams points and monetary penalties?
Revert back to 1 division with an eight team playoff scenario?

The 3 division plan was put into place last season and as it turned out, the whole setup was a shambles and defeated the whole purpose of having a third division by letting a team come straight down from the top division to the lower league. BTW......Guess who won that title?

Whatever the fix or anybody with ideas or options, go ahead and speak up. Post away anonymously if you like and air your views.
